Spring Semester: A Closer Look at Working with Colored Pencils

Through the interplay between implement and paper, an artist controls the impact and perception of an artwork. While beginners are welcome, this class is better suited for students who are familiar with the medium and wish to further develop their skills and learn new tricks of the trade. One such technique is "under-layering," which adds depth and richness. We will also cover how to blend tones, build values with overlapping pigments, how to choose the best pencil color for burnishing, and most importantly, how to adjust each of the above techniques to your choice of paper color and texture. Each student will choose a theme, object or scene to draw. Options and methods will be discussed during class for the benefit of all. Materials will be determined based on the optimal combination of paper and pencils to achieve a desired outcome. Please bring a pocket folder for storing weekly reference sheets. Class will not meet April 22.
