Traditional Calligraphy – The Italic Hand (script)
Italic, or Chancery Cursive, was the handwriting of Renaissance scribes. Today, Italic calligraphy is frequently used for invitations, envelopes, place cards, or in decorative art pieces. In this class, beginner students will learn this elegant alphabet following a step-by-step approach which will cover the basic strokes that create the letters, both miniscules (lower-case letters) and majuscules (capitals). For returning students, we will discuss spacing, layout, and learn simple flourishing. The goal is to design a small decorative final piece – perhaps your favorite quote – worthy of framing!
Materials: for initial sessions, materials will be available in class. A full list of materials (paper pads, calligraphy markers or Pilot Parallel pen) will be provided for students to purchase on their own. Please bring a pocket folder in which to store weekly reference sheets.
Class will not meet on April 22.
